Dortmund is one of the most northern cities of the Ruhrgebiet and where other cities might have a heart, in Dortmund there's a football. A black and yellow one that is, since Borussia Dortmund is one of Germany's Bundesliga clubs with the most followers.Being an industrial city in the Ruhrgebiet Dortmund has seen quite a few changes since it was first mentioned in the 9th century. And the most significant one probably took place in the last decades when it changed from an industrial location to a place with a huge diversity covering technology and research aspects just as well as culture and sports. Despite all prejudices the Ruhrgebiet and Dortmund, its biggest city, have become greener and greener within the recent years.
The Stadium
The "Westfalenstadion", also known as the "Opera House" of the Bundesliga, is one of the biggest stadiums in the twelve host cities. It holds 60,000 seats and offers a most dense athmosphere to all fans. Another superlative are the 3,450 seats of the food service points that the arena offers. The German Red Cross will be taking care of any medical needs, of course including diabetes care.

Hotel Booking and Diabetes Tips
Dortmund has many hotels in all price ranges. If you haven't booked your hotel yet, it's high time. The easiest way to do so is by using this link provided by the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ Accommodation Services (WCAS):

When booking your hotel you should inquire whether the hotel has its own doctor and if that is not the case, the reception desk should be able to tell you where the nearest doctor and pharmacy are.

From the Westfalenhalle with almost non-stop events to the Casino Hohensyburg you will find all sorts of occupations to kill the time between the football games of the FIFA World Cup 2006™. And if that still is not enough, how about a trip to the other parts of the Ruhrgebiet? Because of the very good infrastructure of the region, cities like Essen and Bochum with their industrial museums and theme parks are very easily accessible via railroad.
