Kaiserslautern is a city with a lot of "international football experience". Their Bundesliga club 1.FC Kaiserslautern has been a constant challenge for foreign teams in the international team cups in the past. Their old stadium was a place that teams from abroad literally feared, since it was the home of the "Red Devils" from the "Betzenberg"They really like football in the old city in the Palatine Forest. And that is probably one of the main reasons why Kaiserslautern has become a host city for the FIFA World Cup 2006™. The tradition of football, ranging from the legendary Walter-brothers in the 1950s (Fritz and Otmar Walter were two of the players who won the first World Cup for Germany in 1954) to the international successful periods of the 1.FC Kaiserslautern in the more recent years.

Like almost all host cities Kaiserslautern has also chosen not to use the traditional "football temple" but to reconstruct their stadium for the FIFA World Cup 2006™. The "Fritz Walter Stadium", named after the famous team captain of the legendary world cup winning team of 1954, was completed in late 2005 and now offers almost 44,000 brand new seats for enthusiastic football fans.
