FIFA World Cup(tm) cities: Leipzig

The birthplace of the German Football Association is also one of the host cities of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™. Leipzig, one of Germany's cities with the most intense cultural background is waiting for its guest from all over the world.

The city could also be called "the city of sport". In the German Democratic Republic Leipzig was the centre of sports education with the German College for Physical Education. Round about 60,000 people keep their physique fit in one of Leipzig's 300 sports clubs. Today the Olympic Training Centre is where German athletes prepare for international sports events.

The stadium

The "Zentralstadion" in Leipzig was once the biggest stadium in Germany with a capacity of 100,000 seats and from 1997 onwards a new stadium was constructed within the walls of the old monumental sports arena. A new emergency evacuation system provides maximum savety for all visitors. The stadium's capacity today is about 45,000, and the futuristic roof construction with its integrated floodlights will help to provide best atmosphere possible.

Hotel Booking and Diabetes Tips

Leipzig has many hotels in all price ranges. If you haven't booked your hotel yet, it's high time. The easiest way to do so is by using this link provided by the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ Accommodation Services (WCAS):

When booking your hotel you should inquire whether the hotel has its own doctor and if that is not the case, the reception desk should be able to tell you where the nearest doctor and pharmacy are.

What else can I do with my time?

The hometown of Johann Sebastian Bach and the Thomasian Boys Choir has a lot to offer on the cultural side - the 300 years old opera house, the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Mendelssohn House just to mention a few - but at the end of the day, there is more than that. Goethe's Auerbach's Keller is where culture and the fine art of celebrating meet. The city's vibrant nightlife is an open invitation to pub crawls, concerts, street art and plenty more. When the night is through and there is no match on the next day you might consider spending a day out in the green in the Auenwald floodplain forest or the Clara Zetkin Park. Or you might go for a boat trip on the Karl Heine Canal. Leipzig offers many recreation opportunities to its visitors. Find more information at:
