"Nuremberg is under the spell of football", says Lord Mayor Dr. Ulrich Maly on the city's official homepage. Which is not at all surprising, if one considers that the local Bundesliga club FC Nuremberg is proud to have one of the most reliable fan bases in Germany. Besides that, the almost thousand years old city, is rich in history and culture.Nuremberg was once an important industrial city in Bavaria. The first German railway line between Nuremberg and Fuerth was opened here in 1835. Today, the city is changing its character to a service centre with technological focus. Football is playing a major role in Nuremberg ever since. The local Bundesliga team FC Nuremberg has won the national championship for a couple of times and, despite troublesome recent years, still keeps people enthusiastic for the sport with the round pigskin.
The stadium
The "Franken-Stadium" in Nuremberg is one of the three arenas that feature a running track around the green. Yet, the three matches of the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup proved that the atmosphere in Nuremberg is just as breathtaking as in all the other stadiums of the FIFA World Cup 2006™. Reconstruction measures were undertaken until April 2005 thus lowering the ground of the stadium and hereby providing more space for seats. So now, almost 42,000 seats are the gross seating capacity of this arena.

What else is there to do?
The Nuremberg State Theatre provides the whole range from ballet to opera and theatre, both, modern and classic. There are even puppeteers of international reputation in Nuremberg on a regular basis.
The nearby natural river banks of the river Pegnitz offer many beautiful spots to cool down from the heat of the football matches and of course there is the city park and the city Zoo which boasts to be one of the largest and most beautifully landscaped Zoos in Europe.
The small alleys of the old town provide a very dense and intimate atmosphere for going out and celebrating when the matches are over.
